In June 2019 I started my PhD on organic soils in Germany, investigating their distribution and soil properties. My PhD project is part of the National Peatland Monitoring Program for Climate Protection which is conducted at the Thünen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture1. Our aim is to establish a consistent long-term monitoring programme across Germany that will be the basis for investigating changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks depending on site conditions and management. Furthermore, we intend to improve data and methods for upscaling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
