In principle, every book dealing with mires and peatlands has to be greeted with appreciation. The natural peatlands (a special category of organic soils) are unique landscapes and ecosystems which are not very well known to people in general. Thus, more information written in an attractive and enthusiastic form is highly welcome.It was an exciting moment to open Edward Struzik’s book. The fanciful front cover didn’t give any hint as to what would be the author’s approach to the fascinating world of swamps, fens, bogs, muskegs… Would the reading experience ahead betray a novel, textbook or scientific monograph?
