The EU could soon make it easier for member states to build renewable power projects-mainly wind and solar power farms-by waiving requirements for environmental impact assessments in certain predefi ned areas on land and at sea.Brussels says up to 170 billion cubic meters of Russian gas per year could be displaced by building 480 gigawatts of wind and 420 GW of solar capacity by 2030.Industry lobby group SolarPower Europe says up to 1,000 GW of solar power capacity could be built by 2030 with the right kind of regulatory and fi nancial support.At the end of last year,Europe had 236 GW of onshore and offshore wind capacity and around 165 GW of solar capacity.The EU aims to reduce permitting times from roughly two or three years at present to a maximum of one year,with a three-month extension in exceptional cases.
