Growing up in south-west Gippsland, Jeff worked for local dairy manufacturers and completed an employer-sponsored Diploma in Dairy Manufacturing at the former Werribee School of Dairy Technology. After his training, Jeff joined the CSIRO Dairy Research Laboratory at Highett as research pilot plant manager when Les Hammond, another Australian dairy industry stalwart, took up a position with the Australian Dairy Produce Board. Jeff kept up this responsibility until the mid-1990s when the Cheese Technology group relocated to the Werribee food research precinct. As the long-time manager and advising technologist attached to the highly successful CSIRO dairy research and technology facility in Highett, Jeff interacted daily with groups conducting research into many aspects of dairy manufacturing, including dried and recombined milks, casein and caseinates, whey proteins, UHT milks, novel protein fractions, and traditional and novel fermented dairy foods.
