According to recent research, the co-products of amino acid fermentation show great potential as protein sources for piglets. The digestibility of protein and amino acids of the co-products is similar to that of soybean meal in piglet diets.Soybean meal (SBM) is the most widely used plant source of protein in animal diets. However, taking the EU example, concerns are increasing regarding the amount of imported feed proteins from outside the EU. The EU is concerned that such massive dependency on imports makes the EU livestock sector extremely vulnerable to price volatility and trade distortions, causing feed price to rise, thereby increasing farmers' production costs and reducing the sectors' profitability. On the other hand, the major concern for most NGOs is the deforestation of tropical rain forest to fulfill the need of arable land for soybean cultivation. The result is a feed industry in constant search of sustainable alternative sources of protein for use in animal diets.
