According to the earliest sources, Ruesta originated as an Islamic fortress in the ninth century at the foot of the Pyrenees, in the vicinity of the Aragon River and its tributary, the Regal River - an area of northern Spain known today as the Pre-Pyrenees. During the wars of Sancho Garces I against the Muslims in the 10th century, the settlement passed into Christian hands. For nearly a millennium, the settlement prospered, growing from the castle outwards and shaping its urban structure in accordance with the physiognomy of its territory, reaching a hundred houses in the 19th century.
