The new building for the Barmherzige Brüder (St John of God Brothers) beside the lovely Danube river meadows near Vienna offers 210 care places and 30 residential units. The architecture by Christoph E. H. Lechner reflects current standards and provides ideal support for the humanitarian-religious careconcept of the order that runs the buiiding. The home in Kritzendorf - operated by one of the most important church institutions in the area of social medicine - has been in exist-ence for long time. The Baroque buiiding of the Barmherzige Brüder, to which a floor was added in the 1950s, now houses the adminis-tration and staff housing. The facility is locat-ed in an idyllic village close to Klosterneuburg and has a view across the Danube meadows that lie somewhat lower. A residential home designed by architects Hoppe and Krakora from the 1970s and 1980s stood next to the Baroque buiiding. In designing the new nursing home, the challenge for Christoph Lechner was how to form and position the considera-ble volume in such a way that it does not impair the effect made by the landscape and the ensemble, while also ensuring that every care room can enjoy the beautiful views.
