For almost two decades, the liquid fuel heating industry has been on the path of carbon emission reductions through the introduction of low carbon, renewable fuels blended into petroleum heating oil.Bio-diesel(ASTM 6751)has been the low-carbon fuel of choice and has gone through extensive testing, both in the laboratory and in the field, showing its value as a practical and effective replacement for heating oil. Most of the industry and millions of homeowners are aware of Bioheat~R fuel, the trademarked name for the blend. The adoption of Bioheat~R fuel has been aggressive by some retail marketers while others have been reluctant.Regardless, public policy makers in the Northeastern States have been aggressive in their demands that the home heating sector reduce carbon emissions. The heating industry's acceptance and adoption of low carbon, renewable liquid fuels has accelerated in recent years. Now,we are seeing major retail liquid fuel marketers committing to ever increasing blends including B-50(50 biodiesel with 50 heating oil. Some are currently conducting field trials(in tandem with laboratory testing)of using 100 biodiesel(B100).
