The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) is a solution aiming to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen for improved energy security and to help meet the fast-approaching renewable energy targets. Europe is seeking energy independence from Russia well before 2030, as is proposed by the European Commission in its plan 'REPowerEU' released in March this year. The EHB has therefore brought forward its goals of achieving this from 2035 to 2030, to meet the REPowerEU targets. Green hydrogen, the sort produced through water electrolysis using electricity, is a clean and versatile fuel, producing almost zero greenhouse gas emissions, whether combusted or oxidised inside a fuel cell. It is pinned as being global industry's best option for decarbonising the energy system, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors. Hydrogen can also function as an energy carrier, thus optimising the energy system and enhancing its flexibility.
