Digital Machinist has now published two articles outlining the design and construction of an automated digital scanner for 35 mm slides (Figure 25). The first two installments described the mechanical design and construction of the scanner (DM Summer and Fall 2022). The scanner was designed to automatically digitize up to 80 slides without user intervention. In operation, one loads a stack of slides into a hopper that contains a stepper motor-controlled elevator. This elevator pushes the stack toward the top of the hopper where individual slides are captured by a shuttle mechanism. The shuttle then moves each slide into position over a small light box where an image is acquired by an SLR digital camera. Once the image is captured, the shuttle continues to move the slide until it is deposited in a retrieval chute. The system was designed to function with a Canon T2i Rebel Digital SLR Camera with a 15-55 mm zoom lens mounted with a 25 mm macro extension.
