US agricultural biotechnology company Pheronym (Davis, California) has received $1 million under the US National Science Foundation's (NSF) small business innovation research (SBIR) grant. The proceeds will enable the business to undertake commercial manufacturing of its nematode pheromone extract, Nemastim, for the control of pests such as thrips, weevils (Curculionoidea spp), citrus weevils (Diaprepes abbreviatus), peach tree borer moths (Synanthedon exitiosa), and apple tree borers (Chrysobothris femorata). The product is also effective against leatherjackets (Tipula spp) and white grubs (Phyllophaga spp) affecting turfgrasses.
