Depression is a common and often debilitating mental health condition that aff ects a signifi cantproportion of the population. Antihypertensive drugs are prescribed for the pharmacologicalmanagement of high blood pressure, which aff ects approximately one third of adults globally. While these drugs are generally well tolerated, concerns remain about the potential risk ofdepression associated with their use. Several studies have investigated the link betweenantihypertensive drugs and depression, with mixed results. Some studies have reported anincreased risk of depression in patients taking certain classes of antihypertensive drugs, suchas beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers; others have found no signifi cant associationbetween these medicines and depression, or report a reduction in risk of depression. Usingevidence, this review considers whether any diff erences in the risk of depression exist betweenantihypertensive classes or if any particular drugs stand out as being more or less likely to belinked with depression.
