Turkey’s imports of thermal coal rose sharply on the year from a low base in May, with Russia retaining its status as its main supplier. Thermal coal imports rose to 2.34mn t in May from 1.27mn t in the same month a year ago, according to Turkish statistics agency TUIK data. This brought aggregate imports in January-May to 12.83mn t, up from 9.26mn t during the same period a year earlier. Turkish coal burn averaged 8.6GW in the first five months of the year, suggesting an estimated coal burn of 11.28mn t. By comparison, estimated coal consumption was nearly at parity with imports, which stood at 9.26mn t during the same period in 2022.
