Surgical Clinic and Health Center in Leo was built to ease pressure on the existing district hospital and serve the local population's medical needs. The center is equipped with surgical facilities, an in-patient ward, and a maternity unit. In a later phase, Doctors' Housing (pp. 52-55) complemented this project on an adjacent site. Creating an inclusive atmosphere and offering an alternative to the intimidating rigidity that often characterizes the architecture of health institutions, the facility comprises 10 modular units loosely arranged to create a variety of sheltered, interstitial spaces that feel both dynamic and welcoming. This modular system also reduces costs and speeds up the construction process. Large overlapping roofs protect the raw clay walls during the rainy season and shade them from the hot daytime sun. These roofs are specially designed for efficient rainwater collection in a region where it rains only 3 months of the year, making water collection and management extremely important to the health and welfare of the local community, as well as to the environment. A rainwater and gray-water collection and filtration system irrigates surrounding plants and trees. Oxygen is added to treat the gray water, using solar energy collected from panels on-site.
