Hydraulic restrictors are used through the aircraft to control the flow/pressure throughout the system. Within ATA32 they are always found on actuators in order to provide the correct movement characteristics of the gear and doors during gear extension/retraction. For example, during gear extension or landing gear door opening, hydraulic restrictors damp the movement to ensure the components do not move too fast. However during retraction, different restrictors may be preferable to achieve a given actuator performance to aid the aircraft climb performance. Therefore, restrictor with different characteristics depending on the flow direction are commonly used within ATA32. An example of an asymmetric restrictor arrangement can be seen below.
