Improving the precision and reliability of atmospheric observation is crucial in weather forecasting, as it helps prediction algorithms have an accurate initial state from which to start. The new satellites in Europe's Meteosat Third Generation program offer step-change monitoring capabilities that will benefit short-term forecasts especially, known as nowcasting. The focus has been distinctive in the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) since Eumetsat, the intergovernmental organization in charge of managing weather satellites, and the Euro-pean Space Agency (ESA) greenlighted the program in 2008. Climate experts had long predicted that severe, sudden meteorological phenomena would become more frequent. Europe has experienced a number of such events in the last few months, so the performance boost in nowcasting is eagerly awaited by scientists, weather-sensitive industries and governments.
