A sea of troubles There is no doubt that vaquitas are charismatic animals but their dolphin-like 'smile' and 'panda' eyes are not helping it attract the attention of conservationists wordwide. This is because they are found in only one place in the world - a small area at the northern end of the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez (Figure 1). And at the start of 2022 there were probably only seven or eight of them left.
