Often the plant's troubleshooters,offer very expensive and impractical solutions without root cause analysis.The article describes 5 actual case study examples where root cause analysis solved the problems at negligible costs and least shutdown times.The case studies include i)solving problem in boiler feed water pump by averting pump overhaul; ii)proper solution of antifriction bearing of a BFW pump which outlived its life; iii)low vacuum problem in a surface condenser of a compressor's steam turbine in two ammonia plants; and; iv)replacing pitot tube with orifice plate for more accurate cooling water flow measurement at exit of surface condenser and assessment of pump adequacy.
