Though most Washington DC gossip this month is focused on what the FBI found in former President Trump's safe, in the water world some of us have been even more transfixed by what is going on at WSSC Water. The largest water utility in the DC region and one of the largest municipal utilities in the US, WSSC is governed by the two large suburban counties where it operates, and it has been a regular source of political infighting and news headlines over the years. In the latest drama, the WSSC board has declined to renew the contract of dynamic general manager Carla Reid, with little explanation. Reid has lashed back, sending a recent letter to both county governments declaring that WSSC is an "organisation in crisis" and calling for two board members to be removed for interfering with her operating authority before her contract expires on 31 December. The story also includes anonymous whistle-blowers providing media scoops about alleged mismanagement, and the resignation of a board member accused of conflicts of interest.
