Isolated aspen (Populus tremuloides) callus tissue was found to secrete materials which resulted in an initial stimulation, followed by an inhibition, of the growth of anAgrobacteriumspecies. Isolated aspen tissue also produced starch digestion materials which were not identical to the antimicrobial materials. The antimicrobial material was primarily bactericidal. A progressive release of antimicrobial materials was found as the weight of the tissue increased. The presence of dimethylsulfoxide in the culture medium did not influence the secretion of antimicrobial materials under the conditions employed. Attempts to isolate and characterize the antimicrobial materials have been unsuccessful.
