All rights reserved.Magnetic resonance imaging-guided laserinduced interstitial thermotherapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive procedure in which a locally introduced laser fiber is used to produce a selective tissue ablation. Although ablative interventions on CNS lesions have been carried out for decades, only recent developments in the field of imaging have enabled real-time monitoring of the emitted thermal energy. This enables the controlled treatment of a large number of CNS diseases such as gliomas, brain metastases, radiation necrosis, but also certain forms of epilepsy. Due to the low invasiveness and morbidity of LITT, it represents a promising alternative to open brain surgery in patients who would not tolerate an open surgical intervention but also in patients with deep and difficult to access lesions.
