BRAZILIAN state-controlled Petrobras is applying new technologies ranging from subsea robots to remotely operated vehicle (ROV) services to reduce human diving operations and further ensure safety at such activities. The main objective of the company's diverless synergies programme is to gradually lower the exposure of employees to risk in operations that can be performed through the use of subsea equipment, thus optimising time and costs. The diverless concept is being implemented in projects from the conceptual engineering phase of new production platforms, covering the design of subsea equipment to their production and control lines. Petrobras has already reduced human diving operations by 54% and the goal is to increase this to 90% by 2025. "Our technical staff was able to develop complex procedures that allowed us to carry out operations in an innovative way, overcoming challenges and increasing the safety of production systems," Joao Luis Batista, Petrobras coordinator of the diverless programme, said.
