Our picture shows the start of work on repairing the breach which has kept the Leeds Liverpool Canal shut to through traffic since October. Following the burst, which happened where a stream culvert passes under the canal bed on an inaccessible length of canal at Rishton, temporary dams were inserted to secure the site. Next, a temporary road to the site had to be created for machinery and then an access way along the canal bed, before the excavators could be brought in to begin work. Meanwhile the Canal River Trust's engineers designed a repair for the breach.
