Our State-side correspondent shares his pearls of wisdom as he bids farewell to the FDJ. For the 50th issue of the journal, I think it’s fitting that this is my last article. It’s been an honor and privilege to share my opinions but after eight years, it’s time for fresh blood with fresh ideas. The hardest part of writing for the FDJ has been to come up with interesting topics. That part I won’t miss. After 40 plus years as a practising dentist, I’m rapidly becoming a dinosaur. First, I’m an owner operator. As of 2020, nearly a third of all US dentists work for dental service organizations and that number is growing yearly.1 The advantage is that someone else manages the business end of dentistry. The disadvantage is loss of control ranging from your work schedule to what treatment you have to do. Working at one reminded me of being back in dental school except the guys in charge knew less about treatment planning and dentistry than I did. They did, however, know an awful lot about billing and maximizing profit.
