In 1774 they was described in the local newspaper as "The noblest works of the kind that perhaps are to be found... in the Universe". They certainly knew how to exaggerate in those days. But I can't help thinking, as I stand in the canal bed below the bottom lock of the Bingley Five-Rise Locks, looking up at the full 20ft-plus height enormous new pair of bottom gates in all their splendour, that it's still pretty damned impressive even today.
