The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission heard a broad range of views Dec. 5 on how it could require a minimum level of interregional electric transmission capacity as the agency considers ways to safeguard the nation’s power grid. The ability to transfer large amounts of electricity between different regions will become increasingly crucial as the US shifts to more variable sources of energy such as wind and solar and as extreme weather events grow in frequency and severity.
