In the QP article "Feather in Your Cap," the authors reviewed 30 years' performance of excellence models-principally the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the similar European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Award. Numerous countries offer awards tuned to the Baldrige award, and more are bestowed by states and provinces. In addressing precipitous declines in applications for the dominant excellence models (DM), the authors offered several likely explanations, such as: Cost too much time and money. Overly bureaucratic. Yield too few enduring benefits. Over-emphasizes the award vs. "true excellence."
