摘要

How to preserve valuable archive data for generations to come? Danny Bradbury analyses new solutions to the problem and the challenges they present. 'HANCOCK'S Half Hour' was obviously never envisioned as the success it became. Many episodes of this fifties TV comedy were discarded by the BBC in the face of huge archiving challenges during the early days of TV. When historians decided that it was part of the canon, they went to find the old episodes, only to discover they no longer existed. "They were recovered largely by public appeal from taped broadcasts," explains Chris Rusbridge, director of the UK's. Digital Curation Centre (DCC). "In many cases, what they recovered was recorded by Americans, having been converted to NTSC. The BBC did a lot of work building hardware that would intelligently convert NTSC recordings back into PAL to overcome this problem."
