Mastitis is inflammatory reaction of the udder tissue due to either physical trauma or infections causing visible change in milk (colour, fibrin clots and flakes) along with yield and composition. Similarly inflammation of teats is known as thelitis, which is associated with traumatic injury and infections. Mastitis in dairy animals is of significant economic importance as it causes severe losses to dairy farms. Dairy animals are more prone to infection of mammary gland during the transition and dryperiods (Esposito et al, 2014). The pathogens causing mastitis are broadly categorized into contagious and environmental mastitis pathogens (Bradley, 2002) that include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, Coliforms, etc. (Abdi et al, 2021). Conductivity in affected milk increases due to increase in the level of Na~+ and Cl' that can be easily detected using digital detectors (Plate 1&2). Mastitis can also be detected based on increased somatic cells count (SCC) in milk (Plate 3).
