The protection of biodiversity has taken significant steps forward over recent decades in Finland. This can be seen in both the total area of protected forests and the nature management of commercial forests. Together with Natural Resources Institute Finland and the Finnish Environment Institute, the Finnish Forest Industries Federation implemented a joint project which, among other things, looked at changes in structural features that are important for biodiversity. According to the project, the total area of protected woodland has increased fivefold in all of Finland since the end of the 1970s, and has increased by a factor of 17 in Southern Finland.
