Among some of the more exotic Soviet-era weapons operated by the UkrAF are the VR-2 Strizh and VR-3 Reys reconnaissance systems, utilizing the Tu-141 and Tu-143 UAVs, respectively. These were developed in the late 1970s and series-built by 1990, the long-range Tu-141 being an enlarged version of the Tu-143. Immediately after the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022 some were repurposed as 'kamikaze' drones and modified to carry a warhead instead of reconnaissance equipment. It is thought that they were also fitted with a modern navigation/guidance system.
