The diesel generator is the mainstay of power provision in the industry but the need for clean-and-green alternatives is no longer just an environmental imperative. Construction leaders are setting bold targets to end their reliance on diesel and demanding change-enabling solutions. But, while low-pollutant, net-zero generators are in the market, billions more are still projected to be spent on diesel in the coming years. This is for two reasons: first, hydrogen and biofuel supplies are not sufficiently secure nor economically viable. Second, the lengthy lifespan of diesel generators means appetite for additional investment in new renewable-fuelled generators is limited. With the heavy costs for replacing working assets and a steady supply of renewable alternatives still lacking, companies have little option but to keep installing diesel generators, delaying their transition away from diesel by a decade or more each time. So, what is needed for the industry to make the move?
