It was 2008, in the midst of the recession, and Jenny Zhu assured herself she had the right ingredients to start her own home textiles business from scratch: a Bachelor of Arts in Textile Design from Fashion Institute of Technology, a can-do attitude, a strong gut instinct and a pair (maybe a few pairs) of high heels. "When I got started, I was just I my 20s and the country was in the middle of a financial crisis. No one in the industry wanted to work with a new supplier," she said. "But when you are in the worst situation like I was, you can either call it quits or you can seek an opportunity. And I found my opportunity." Internet-based retail was not a focus for most vendors at the time, and Zhu noticed other home textiles suppliers were not willing to invest in drop-ship capabilities to fulfill one order at a time.
