The nature of land ownership has been the subject of intense and passionate debate for many years in Scotland. The publication of Andy Wightman’s seminal research on land ownership in 1997 (Wightman, 1997) highlighted the highly concentrated nature of land ownership in rural areas, -but forest properties were excluded from his work. Accounting for approximately 20% of Scotland’s land cover, forestry is directly relevant to public policy, as its ownership determines how forests are managed and can contribute to the nation’s targets regarding climate change, biodiversity, sustainable rural development and land reform.
