The renewable fuels company Gevo is to build a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility estimated at more than US$1 billion on 245 acres (99 ha) just outside Lake Preston, South Dakota. The NZ1 project is expected to employ 1,000 people during construction, with approximately 90 full-time employees once operational. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2023 and is estimated to come online in 2025. It will produce 55 million gallons (250 million litres) of aviation fuel annually. Gevo estimates it will need 35 million bushels (0.889 million tonnes) of sustainable corn yearly from local farmers. "Lake Preston met the company's criteria for a site, which needed to include the availability of low-carbon/ sustainably grown corn, access to rail and local acceptance of wind energy usage," said Heather Manuel, vice president of corporate communications.
