A known chiral beta-diketiminate, [HC{MeCN-(S)-(-)-CHMePh}(MeCNDip)](-) (Dip = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) L-1, and a new chiral amidinate, [(BuC)-C-t(NAr*){N-(S)-(-)-CHMePh}](-) L-2 (Ar* = C6H2{C(H)Ph-2}(2)Me-2,6,4) have been utilised in the synthesis of the first examples of enantiopure, dinuclear magnesium(i), [(L-1)Mg-Mg(L-1)], and magnesium(ii) hydride complexes, [(L-2)Mg(mu-H)(2)Mg(L-2)] and [(L-2)(THF)Mg(mu-H)(2)Mg(THF)(L-2)]. A related enantiopure beta-diketiminato magnesium hydride cluster compound, [(L-1)(4)Mg5H6], has also been synthesised, presumably forming via a partial redistribution of in situ generated [(L-1)Mg(mu-H)(2)Mg(L-1)].
