ILLAWARRA Coal's Appin mine will shave six days off its longwall changeout times with new longwall equipment commissioned in May. The New South Wales mine started producing mid-May using a second set of longwall equipment, including a new Joy shearer, armoured face conveyor and pans, with the existing 181 1000t roof supports on Longwall 409 - a 931.5-metre long panel with a face width of 272.5m. The equipment, worth 22.8 million dollars, was ordered in May last year and manufactured in China, the USA and the UK. Appin took delivery of the equipment for precommissioning in December and completed undergroun installation in late April.
