Abstract Humic acids (HAs) and fulvic acids (FAs) isolated from brown coals of the Tisul’skoe and Tyul’ganskoe deposits were characterized using ultimate and proximate analyses. The Fourier transform IR and 13С NMR (CPMAS) spectroscopic data showed a significant difference in the structural-group compositions of HAs and FAs. The results of testing the biological activity of lignite FAs are presented based on an example of Iren varietal wheat seeds. It was shown that a maximum effect of FAs on the height of seedlings and the length of the roots of wheat seeds manifested itself in comparison with the control samples. FAs of the naturally oxidized form of brown coal from the Tisul’skoe deposit exhibited the highest biological activity.
