dancing in the womb was the third solo show from Rezia Wahid MBE, a Bangladeshi-born British textile artist and designer whose work has been exhibited both in the UK and abroad. The series of six handwoven pieces reflected the poetic inspirations felt, seen and collected by Wahid during pregnancy and motherhood. A warp which she designed when pregnant with her first child was put to one side as her other teaching and work projects took precedence. It was the March 2020 lockdown which finally gave her the opportunity to revisit it. The six pieces were all gossamer-light woven cloths with floating weft inserts which drew the observer into a journey through the movement of the weft patterns. The light fabric and simple flow of pattern created a meditative and calming feeling that reflects the rhythms that Rezia felt during her pregnancies and motherhood. The pieces were woven using natural materials (spun silk, merino wool, mercerised cotton and silk organzine) and are of various sizes, the longest being 7m. They were each hung and draped from the ceiling and were so delicate they appeared to float and move in the slightest breeze; they felt like an artistic representation of a poem or story that opened the viewer into Rezia's world.
