THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HEATING, REFRIGERATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING ENGINEERS (ASHRAE) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) updated ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2022, Energy Efficiency Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The 2022 version expanded the standard's scope and added a requirement for on-site renewable energy. Regarding lighting, it adjusted power allowances, modified the requirements for alterations, incorporated horticultural and germicidal lighting and updated a few control requirements. Commercial building energy codes regulate the design energy efficiency of nonresidential buildings. While some states write their own codes, a majority adopt, in whole or part, model codes and standards such as 90.1 and the International Energy Conservation Code(IECC). In terms of adoption, the IECC is far more popular, though it references 90.1 as an alternative compliance standard. Otherwise, 90.1 is recognized by the Department of Energy as the national reference standard and serves as the basis for building rating systems such as LEED.
