The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, in an article published in June, describes how Cordia, the Phoenix-based district energy company, is acquiring downtown Pittsburgh steam service distribution service from the nonprofit Pittsburgh Allegheny County Thermal. "Cordia's ultimate goal is to expand its reach in the Golden Triangle, delivering steam produced at its natural gas-fired plants Uptown and on Duquesne University's campus," the newspaper reports. The Golden Triangle is the city's nickname for its downtown area, which flourished off Pittsburgh's 20th-century steel industry prosperity. The article has Cordia putting $200 million over the past year into Pittsburgh's energy infrastructure and quotes Cordia's northeast regional manager, Mark Schneider, as saying the company will be patient but persistent in expanding its Pittsburgh system: "We're playing the long game." Cordia's acquisition brings much-needed capital to an aging system.
