India is taking steps to ensure higher generation at imported coal-based utilities as part of a broader goal to meet rising power demand. The country’s federal power minister Raj Kumar Singh has asked representatives of imported coal-based power plants and states contracted to buy electricity from such utilities “to resolve all the operational issues” to make such utilities “fully functional,” according to a statement from the ministry. India has 13 such plants with a combined generation capacity of 17.6GW, accounting for slightly under 10pc of the country’s overall coal-fred generation capability. The plants have been running at lower capacities for some time because of a num- ber of reasons including the volatility in imported coal prices.
