I LOVE TO MAKE CONNECTIONS. Between people, between the real world and books. From a Super Bowl commercial to a news item to a story in this magazine. Between a city I am visiting for the first time and a place I have been before. Maybe that is why I love puzzles and mysteries, which can be solved by making connections. In "Infrastructure That Builds New Connections," Chuck Ross writes about the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., which connects downtown to the eastern neighborhoods. Read about this project's big payoff on page 56. Chuck also takes a look at the challenges found in rolling out rural broadband. The places without connections are the most remote and will be the most expensive to overhaul, but funds from the American Rescue Plan Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act are making it possible. Doug Dawson, president and owner of telecom consulting firm CCG Consulting, urges people who do not have broadband to connect with their state representatives to ensure they get covered. Check it out on page 18.
