摘要

The main theme of the present study was to evaluate the association of dietary patterns with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) and its features among Pakistani adults.A cross-sectional survey involving adults of age > 20 years (n=288) permanently residing in District Peshawar with no history of chronic disease was conducted.Life-style and socio-demographic information’s were collected through interview.Dietary information was obtained through semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire while standard protocols were followed for anthropometric, biochemical and blood pressure measurements.A fasting blood sample for plasma glucose and lipid profile was also collected. An International Diabetes Federation criterion was adopted for the identification of individuals having MetSyn while dietary patterns were identified by employing factor analysis procedure.Association between variables of interest were explored through multivariate logistic regression.Factor analysis produced three main dietary patterns; healthy, mixed and unhealthy.Healthy pattern characterized by presence of fermented milk, raw vegetables, fish, fruits, vegetable oils and nuts was inversely associated with the risk of MetSyn and most of its abnormalities; abdominal obesity,hyper-triglyceridaemia and low HDL cholesterol. The unhealthy pattern differentiated by presence of red meat, eggs, sugars and sweets have been found to be positively associated with the risk of MetSyn and its associated abnormalities; abdominal obesity, hyper -triglyceridaemia,lower HDL concentration and hypertension. The findings of present work suggested dietary patterns as an important tool for disease and health outcomes. These results could be utilized for the purpose of nutrition interventions and health promotion by health authorities.
