I have come relatively late in life to weaving; previously I have worked as a costume maker in various theatres around the country. In my early 50s I chose to go to my local art school and study BA Textiles, specialising in weave. This was an amazing journey of discovery where I became so immersed in the learning process. My work has a political voice, drawing on my life experiences. For my graduation piece I created a large hanging woven sculpture of two layers, 230cm tall by 70cm wide. This work represents my recent discovery that during the 1990s, I had been living in what is now recognised as a very unsafe building. The Ledbury Estate in Southwark includes three high rise tower blocks constructed with the large panel system made of cast concrete, built in the late 1960s. I was living in Peterchurch Tower. These blocks are structurally unsound, with large cracks running through the buildings causing damp but also a massive fire hazard. They are due to be demolished; however, there are still many other structurally unsafe towers built using the same precast concrete method currently occupied in the UK.
