Ultrasound scan is the investigation of choice for a lump in the neck. This is likely to be a lymph node and therefore blood tests are not required. Ultrasound can define the anatomical location of the lesion and identify its origin. It is superior to computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scanning to assess the internal structure of lymph nodes.
