Shell has permitted what it calls an "early development well" (EDW) at its operated Sparta project in the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico as it continues its evaluation of the resource in the emerging Lower Tertiary play. The supermajor filed a supplement to its original exploration plan in Garden Banks Block 959 and has received a permit to drill a new exploratory well there, according to US permitting records. "The EDW activity is designed to optimize the scope of the Sparta development," a spokesperson told Energy Intelligence.
