Dye removal of industrial and domestic efflu-ents is one of the critical environmental operations, and among many technologies applied in this context. adsorption is known as a process with high potential for removing dyes from wastewater. Although lay-ered clays with a high negative surface charge den-sity are extremely suitable for removing cationic dyes from aqueous solution, they are not effective in the adsorption of anionic dyes in their original form. This study aimed to use Al+ ions, which are widely used in industrial scale as settling or decantation agents in colloidal dispersions, as modifiers in sur-face modification of bentonite clay to make them suitable for adsorption of anionic dyes. In this study, bentonite clay was chosen as an adsorbent and it was modified in the aqueous solution of AlCl3. In addi-tion, cationic dye, methylene blue(MB),and anionic dye, Remazol red RB, were selected as representa-tive dyes, and the influences of variables such as dye concentration, adsorption time and pH on adsorption were investigated. In the case of anionic dye, the ad-sorption efficiency of bentonite clay modified with Al(III)increased, whereas the cationic dye adsorp-tion efficiency decreased, indicating that the modifi-cation is quite effective.
