Alaska notched a tremendous salmon catch, better than expected. Bristol Bay's amazing sockeye productivity continued, and the statewide pink salmon harvest topped the forecast by a lot.But the state also has pockets of misery. The famed Copper River fishery was a disappointment, Chignik was a bust, and the Yukon River was a nightmare. At press time, the statewide, all-species catch stood at just under 220 million fish, well above the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's preseason forecast of about 190 million. It's the ninth time Alaska's annual commercial salmon harvest has exceeded200 million fish.
