Unity through contrasts Out of a group of disparate buildingvolumes Lukas Gobi created a harmonious system made up of historical fabric and new connecting buildings. An intelligent game played with volumes makes the Lengenfeld Campus not only invitingto pupils but also open to its surroundings.Quality secures the future of the place if one looks at thehistorical photos of the "Karner" (the charnel house), or of the old Lengenfeld primary school and kindergarten, it is difficult to recognise them in the buildings' present-day appearance. The individual buildings date from different periods and together they served as school and kindergarten. However, they were not connected, each of them was entered separately from outside. For instance, the schoolchildren had to walk through the rain to reach the gym hall and tramp through the snow to the crafts room. Mayor Christian Kopetzky showed considerable foresight: when the need for space threatened to burst the primary school's boundaries, he decided against erecting yet another isolated building. Instead he set up an architecture competition to find an overall, forward-looking solution. Together with Franz Gschwantner Lukas Gobi won this competition. From the very start the architects and client were in agreement that only an innovative solution of a high-standard could secure the future of Lengenfeld as the location for a primary school and could also offer local residents "a piece of the future", as project head Andres Espana puts it.
